Dry belt, wet belt or chain?
Dry belt
The traditional cambelt behind a plastic cover. Changed by age or mileage, whichever comes first.
Wet belt
Runs inside the engine in oil. Found on Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBlue and PSA 1.2 PureTech engines. See our wet belt page.
Timing chain
Meant to last much longer, but can stretch. A rattle on start-up is the usual sign.
What we replace
A cambelt job is not just the belt. The tensioner and idler pulleys wear at the same rate, and a seized pulley can take a new belt with it. Where the water pump is driven by the belt, it is sensible to change it at the same time, because the labour is already done.
We go by the maker’s interval for your engine, and tell you if your car is overdue based on its age as well as the mileage.

The workshop is at Unit 6, Block 2, Lower Gower Road, off the A505 on the north side of Royston. Collection is free within 5 miles of the workshop. From Ashwell, Baldock, Letchworth Garden City, Hitchin or Buntingford, ask us about collection when you book. You are always welcome to drop the car off yourself.

How often should a cambelt be changed?
It depends on the engine, typically every 5 to 10 years or 40,000 to 100,000 miles. Whichever comes first counts.
Should the water pump be changed too?
Where the belt drives the pump, yes, in most cases. It saves paying the labour twice.
Does my car have a cambelt or a chain?
