Brake repairs in Royston

Squealing, grinding, a pull to one side or a soft pedal: bring it to Lower Gower Road and we will measure what is left, show you the parts and quote before we start.

Signs your brakes need looking at

Noise

A high squeal is often the wear indicator. A grinding sound usually means the pad material has gone and metal is touching the disc.

Pulling or juddering

A pull under braking can be a sticking caliper. Judder through the pedal or wheel points to discs that have worn unevenly.

Pedal feel

A pedal that sinks or feels spongy needs checking straight away. It can mean air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak.

How we check and repair brakes

Wheels come off and we measure pad and disc thickness against the maker’s limits. We look at the slider pins, caliper pistons, hoses and pipes, and test the fluid for water content.

Rear drums are opened up rather than guessed at, because shoes and wheel cylinders wear out of sight. Pads and discs are replaced in axle pairs so the car brakes evenly.

We keep the old parts so you can see them when you collect.

Brakes for Royston drivers

The workshop is at Unit 6, Block 2, Lower Gower Road, off the A505 on the north side of Royston. Collection is free within 5 miles of the workshop. From Ashwell, Baldock, Letchworth Garden City, Hitchin or Buntingford, ask us about collection when you book. You are always welcome to drop the car off yourself.

The hills up to Therfield Heath and stop-start traffic through town both work brakes hard. If the pedal feels wrong, call before you drive far.

Questions we get asked

How often should brake pads be changed?

It depends on how and where you drive. Front pads often last 20,000 to 40,000 miles, rears longer. We measure them at every service.

Do discs always need changing with pads?

No. If the discs are above the minimum thickness and not scored or lipped, new pads can go on the old discs. We measure and tell you.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Most makers say every two years. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point.

Is it safe to drive with a brake warning light?

Get it checked as soon as you can. The red brake light can mean low fluid, and you should not drive far if it is on.
