Wet belt replacement on a timing belt in oil engine

Why the wet belt matters

Wet timing belts in Ford EcoBoost, PSA PureTech and Ford EcoBlue engines often fail earlier than expected, especially with short trips and stop-start driving. We replace the belt before it gets to that point.

What we do and why it matters

We replace the timing belt that runs inside your engine, in the oil. As the rubber ages, tiny particles can break away and block the oil pick-up, starving the engine of oil. A failed belt or a blocked strainer can mean a new engine, so replacing the belt on time costs far less than waiting for a warning light.

Every job is carried out at our Royston and Swindon centres. We quote first and agree any extra work with you and fit OE-spec parts. Every wet belt replacement comes with our own 12-month / 12,000-mile parts and labour warranty, honoured at our Royston and Swindon workshops. We cover Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, Ford 2.0 EcoBlue and PureTech 1.2 engines.

Real examples from our workshop. This is what we find when a wet belt has been left too long.

Teeth delaminating

Swollen and cracked

Oil-soaked rubber swells, cracks and sheds pieces into the oil.

Blocked oil pump strainer: belt debris starves the engine of oil pressure. These photos from our Royston workshop show a frayed wet oil pump belt and a strainer packed with black belt debris. Common signs include the oil pressure warning light and engine noise, so we check and clean the strainer during the wet belt job.

Warning signs of wet belt failure

Spot any of these? Drive as little as you can and call us.

Rattling on cold start

Metallic rattle when the engine is cold: an early sign of belt degradation.

Low oil pressure light

Rubber particles clog the oil strainer and restrict lubrication.

Milky contaminated coolant

Oil mixing with coolant after belt-related failure.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace the wet belt on my EcoBoost or PureTech?

Manufacturers have shortened their recommended intervals over the years, so check your service schedule. We recommend replacement between 60,000 and 80,000 miles, or sooner if you hear rattling. Many cars show issues earlier.

How often should I replace the wet belt on my Ford Transit EcoBlue?

Ford has tightened its EcoBlue guidance over time, and real-world wear often starts from 60,000 miles. We recommend 60,000 to 100,000 miles, or at the first rattle.

What happens if I ignore the wet belt?

Rubber particles clog the oil strainer, oil pressure drops, and the engine can fail. Repairs often run to £3,000–£6,000.

What is involved in a wet belt replacement?

We drain the oil, remove the timing cover, extract the old belt and the oil pump belt, clean debris from the oil system, fit an OE-spec kit, refill with fresh oil and test the vehicle.

Should I replace the water pump on EcoBlue engines at the same time?

Optional water pump replacement is £120 extra during the EcoBlue job and avoids a second labour bill later.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Every wet belt replacement comes with our own 12-month / 12,000-mile parts and labour warranty, honoured at our Royston and Swindon workshops.
