Belt or chain? Check before you book

The first 1.0 EcoBoost engines drove the camshafts with a belt running in oil. Ford later moved the cam drive to a chain, so two cars of the same model can need different work. We confirm it from your car, not just the number plate, before we quote.

A quick guide: if the turbo sits at the front of the engine bay it is usually a belt engine. If it sits at the back, by the bulkhead, it is usually a chain. Some of the chain engines still drive the oil pump with a small belt in the oil, and if yours does, we put that on the quote.

When to book it

Ford once quoted a long life for this belt. Around Royston, with plenty of short trips, we would rather change it between 60,000 and 80,000 miles, or at the first cold rattle, than wait for a light on the dash.

Other early signs are an oil pressure warning, a rough idle, or bits of black rubber in the oil at a service. Once the strainer is blocked the engine can be starved of oil, and a replacement engine costs far more than the belt.

How long it takes

Most wet belt jobs take one working day. If the car reaches us before 9am it is usually ready the same afternoon. A Friday job that runs over is finished on the Saturday so you can collect it, and a booked weekend job dropped off by 9am Saturday is done by Sunday.

Fiestas and Focuses from around Royston

A lot of the EcoBoost cars we see are Fiestas and Focuses used for school runs and short commutes between Royston, Melbourn and Bassingbourn. Drop yours at Lower Gower Road on the way to work,. Collection is free within 5 miles of the workshop. From Letchworth, Baldock or Hitchin, ask us about collection when you book.

Questions we get asked

Is the water pump part of the price?

Yes. The water pump and front case water seal are included in the from £850 price.

My Puma or later Fiesta might be a chain engine. What then?

Most later Pumas and Fiestas use a timing chain, but the oil pump is still driven by a small belt in the oil, and the earliest cars may still have the timing belt. Send the registration and we will tell you which job you need.

What oil goes back in?

Ford-specification 5W-20, which is included in the price.

Why do you take the oil pump off?

So we can check it properly and clean the strainer. Debris left in there can block it again after the new belt is fitted.

Do you collect from Letchworth or Baldock?

Collection is free within 5 miles of the workshop. From Letchworth or Baldock, ask us about collection when you book.
