Wet belt replacement in Royston

We change belt-in-oil timing belts on Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, Ford 2.0 EcoBlue and 1.2 PureTech engines at our workshop on Lower Gower Road. The oil pick-up is cleaned while the engine is open, and you get the price before the car comes in.

Fixed-price quote. The price we quote is fixed. It only goes up if we find something else that needs doing, and we’ll always explain it and get your approval first.

Why we look past the belt itself

On these engines the timing belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil. As the rubber ages it softens and sheds. Those bits travel with the oil and settle on the oil pump strainer, and once the mesh clogs the engine is short of oil, even if the belt has not snapped.

Short runs into town, school trips along the A505 and stop-start traffic on the A10 are hard on a belt that lives in the oil. Fuel and moisture get into the oil when the engine rarely warms through, and the rubber breaks down faster. That is why we often change these belts earlier than the figure in the handbook.

So when we do the job, the sump comes off and the strainer is checked and cleaned before the new belt goes on. If we find anything that needs more work, we ring you with a price first.

When to give us a call

Rattle from cold

A metallic rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start is often the first sign of a tired belt.

Oil pressure warning

If the oil light flickers or stays on, keep driving to a minimum and phone us. It can mean the strainer is partly blocked.

Warning light or lost power

An engine management light or a flat feel under load is worth a check. It is not always the belt, so we test before we quote.

High mileage, no history

No record of the belt being done and 60,000 miles or more on the clock? We would rather check it than guess.

How long it takes

Questions we get asked

How often should the belt be changed?

Check the service schedule for your car, as the makers have shortened their intervals over the years. On EcoBoost and PureTech engines we suggest 60,000 to 80,000 miles. On the EcoBlue we suggest 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Change it sooner if you hear a rattle.

What happens if I leave it?

Belt debris can block the oil strainer, oil pressure falls and the engine can be badly damaged. That repair usually costs several times more than the belt.

What is involved in the job?

We drain the oil, take off the timing cover and sump, remove the old belts, clean the debris out of the oil system, fit the new kit, refill with the correct oil and road test the car.

Should I have the EcoBlue water pump done too?

It is £120 on top of the EcoBlue job. The front of the engine is already open, so it saves paying for that labour again later.

Can you collect from Baldock or Buntingford?

Collection is free within 5 miles of the workshop. Baldock, Buntingford, Letchworth and Hitchin are further out, so ask us about collection from your town when you book.

What warranty do I get?

Our own 12-month / 12,000-mile parts and labour warranty, honoured at our Royston and Swindon workshops.
