Car batteries in Royston

Slow starting, a battery light or a car that is flat every morning. We test the battery and the charging system first, so you only buy a battery if the battery is the problem.

What we test

The battery

A load test shows how much it can really deliver, not just the voltage on a meter.

The charging system

We check the alternator output with the engine running and loads switched on.

Drain

If the car goes flat overnight we look for a parasitic drain: something staying awake after you lock up.

Stop-start cars need the right battery

Cars with stop-start use AGM or EFB batteries, which cope with being drained and recharged many times a day. A standard battery fitted in their place wears out quickly and stop-start may stop working.

Many newer cars also need the new battery registered to the car’s computer so it charges it correctly. We do that as part of the fitting.

Signs your battery is on the way out

Slow cranking

The engine turns over more slowly, especially on cold mornings.

Stop-start not working

The car keeps the engine running at lights when it used to stop.

Warning lights

A battery light, or several lights flickering at start-up.

Age

Most batteries last four to six years. Short trips shorten that.

Questions we get asked

How long does a car battery last?

Usually four to six years. Short trips and cars that sit unused shorten it.

Does my new battery need coding?

Many newer cars, especially with stop-start, need the battery registered so the car charges it properly. We do this when we fit it.

Why does my battery keep going flat?

An ageing battery, a charging fault or something drawing power with the car off. We test all three.

Can I fit a cheaper standard battery to a stop-start car?

We don’t advise it. It will wear out quickly and stop-start may not work.
