Common clutch problems
Slipping
Revs climb but the speed does not, often in higher gears or uphill. The friction plate is worn.
High biting point
The clutch only takes up at the very top of the pedal. Usually a sign the plate is near the end.
Judder
The car shakes as you pull away. Can be the plate, the flywheel or oil contamination.
Heavy or sinking pedal
Points to the release bearing, the cable or the hydraulic master or slave cylinder.
A recent clutch job: 2015 Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost
This Fiesta came in with a slipping clutch. The gearbox was lowered on a transmission jack, the old three-piece kit came out and the flywheel was inspected.
We check the flywheel on every clutch job and only replace it if it is worn or the dual-mass springs have play. If it is fine, you don’t pay for one.
The hydraulics are checked and bled, and the car is road tested before it goes home.

Most clutch jobs take a full working day. We quote for the kit and labour once we know the car, and tell you about the flywheel before ordering one.
Clutch work from our Royston workshop
The workshop is at Unit 6, Block 2, Lower Gower Road, off the A505 on the north side of Royston. Collection is free within 5 miles of the workshop. From Ashwell, Baldock, Letchworth Garden City, Hitchin or Buntingford, ask us about collection when you book. You are always welcome to drop the car off yourself.
If the clutch is slipping badly or the pedal has gone to the floor, don’t drive it in. Call and we will arrange to collect.

How long does a clutch last?
Often 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but towing, town driving and riding the clutch shorten it a lot.
Do I need a new flywheel?
Not always. We inspect it during the job and only replace it if it is worn or the dual-mass unit has failed.
How long does the job take?
Most clutch replacements take a full working day.
Can I drive with a slipping clutch?
Briefly, but it gets worse and can strand you. It also heats the flywheel, which can turn a clutch job into a bigger one.
