Coil spring replacement in Royston

A loud bang from one corner, the car sitting lower on one side, or a scraping noise over bumps. Broken coil springs are common, and we replace them in pairs at our Lower Gower Road workshop.

Why springs break

Springs carry the weight of the car all the time. Over years, salt and stone chips damage the coating and rust starts at a weak point. Then a pothole or a hard bump is enough to snap the bottom coil.

Often the break is only a small piece at the end of the spring, so the car may look normal. A broken spring is an MOT failure and can damage the tyre or the shock absorber if it moves.

What the job involves

Inspection

We confirm which spring has broken and check the one on the other side.

Replacement in pairs

Both springs on the axle are replaced so the car sits level and handles evenly.

While it is apart

Front springs come off with the strut, so we check the shock absorber and top mount and tell you if either is due.

Questions we get asked

Is it safe to drive with a broken spring?

It is not advised. The broken end can cut into the tyre, and the car may handle badly. It is also an MOT failure.

Why replace both springs?

Springs sag with age. A new spring next to an old one makes the car sit and handle unevenly.

How long does it take?

Usually a couple of hours per axle, longer if bolts are seized.

Do I need tracking afterwards?

Not always after a rear spring. On many cars it is worth checking after front strut work.
