Signs of an exhaust problem
Louder than usual
A blow from a joint or a hole in a box. Gets louder over time.
Rattling
A broken heat shield, hanger or internal baffle.
Fumes or smell
Exhaust gas getting out early. Get it checked, especially if you smell it inside the car.
Hanging low
A snapped rubber hanger or rusted bracket. Can damage the rest of the system if left.
What we see on local cars
Back boxes rot from the inside out on cars that do short runs. The engine never gets the exhaust hot enough to boil off the water that collects in it, so it rusts through.
Joints between sections corrode and start to blow, and the clamps seize. We cut out and replace the failed section where that is the sensible repair.
An exhaust leak can upset the oxygen sensors and fail the MOT emissions test, so it is worth sorting before the test.

Do I need a whole new exhaust?
Rarely. We replace the section that has failed, such as the back box or a centre pipe.
Will a blowing exhaust fail the MOT?
A major leak fails the MOT, and it can also affect the emissions result.
Why did my back box rust so quickly?
Short journeys leave water in the system, which rusts it from the inside.
What if the catalytic converter is the problem?
We diagnose the cause first, because a misfire or sensor fault can make a converter look faulty. Then we quote for the repair.
